How It Works
A well-tended vegetable garden can produce a remarkable amount of food. These estimates assume average growing conditions — your actual results will depend on your soil, climate, and care.
Tips
- Tomatoes are the highest-value crop for most home gardeners — six plants can produce 60-90 lbs of fruit in a season.
- Zucchini is famous for its productivity. Two or three plants are plenty for most families (your neighbors will appreciate the extras).
- Succession planting — sowing a new batch of lettuce or beans every 2-3 weeks — stretches your harvest across the whole season.
- Corn needs to be planted in blocks of at least 4x4 stalks for proper wind pollination, not in a single long row.
- Keep a simple garden journal to track what you actually harvest — it helps with planning next year.
