How It Works

Knowing your lawn area is the first step to buying the right amount of seed, fertilizer, weed control, or sod. Most products are labeled per 1,000 square feet, so an accurate measurement saves money and prevents waste.

The Formula

Rectangle: L x W. Triangle: 0.5 x B x H. Circle: π x r². L-Shape: add two rectangles.

Tips

  • For oddly shaped yards, break them into simpler shapes (rectangles and triangles), calculate each, and add them together.
  • Subtract the area of your house, driveway, garden beds, and other non-lawn areas for a more accurate number.
  • One acre is 43,560 square feet — roughly the size of a football field without the end zones.
  • When seeding, buy 10% extra to account for uneven spreading and bird snacking.
  • Sod pallets typically cover about 450 square feet, but check with your supplier — sizes vary by region.
