How It Works

Mulch is one of the best things you can do for your garden. It suppresses weeds, retains moisture, regulates soil temperature, and adds organic matter as it breaks down. The right depth depends on what you are mulching.

Tips

  • Never pile mulch against tree trunks (called "volcano mulching") — it traps moisture and invites rot and pests.
  • Refresh mulch once a year in spring. It breaks down over time, which is actually a good thing — it feeds the soil.
  • For vegetable gardens, straw and shredded leaves are excellent choices that break down quickly and enrich the soil.
  • Avoid dyed mulch (red or black) near food gardens — the dyes are cosmetic and offer no benefit to plants.
  • Landscape fabric under mulch is optional for ornamental beds but should not be used in vegetable gardens where you work the soil regularly.
