How It Works
Plant spacing determines both how many plants you can grow and how well they produce. Too close and plants compete for light, water, and nutrients, leading to smaller harvests and more disease. Too far apart and you waste valuable garden space. Square foot gardening, developed by Mel Bartholomew, uses an intensive grid system where plants are spaced in a square pattern rather than traditional rows with wide walkways between them. This method can fit four to five times more plants in the same area. The trade-off is that you need richer soil (a mix of compost, peat moss, and vermiculite) to support the closer planting. For beginners, square foot gardening is one of the easiest methods to learn.
