How It Works

Planting at the right time makes a huge difference in your garden. Plant too early and a late frost can kill tender seedlings. Plant too late and crops may not ripen before fall frost arrives. The dates above are calculated from your zone average last frost date. "Start indoors" means sowing seeds in pots inside your home under lights or in a sunny window. "Transplant" means moving those started plants into the garden. "Direct sow" means planting seeds straight into the garden soil. Some crops like beans, peas, and carrots grow best when direct sown because they do not like having their roots disturbed.
