How It Works
Getting the right amount of soil saves money and trips to the garden center. Too little soil means shallow roots and stressed plants; too much is wasted money.
The Formula
Volume = Length x Width x Depth (rectangular) or π x r² x Depth (round)
Tips
- For raised beds, 12 inches of depth is ideal for most vegetables. Root crops like carrots and potatoes do better with 18 inches.
- Buying in bulk (cubic yards) is almost always cheaper if you need more than about 20 bags — ask your local garden center about delivery.
- Mix in compost at about 25-30% of total volume for the best growing results. Your plants will thank you.
- Soil settles about 10-15% after the first few waterings, so consider ordering a bit extra.
- For containers, use potting mix rather than garden soil — it drains better and is lighter.
