How It Works
Sun exposure is one of the most important factors in choosing what to grow. Most fruiting vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, squash) need full sun, while leafy greens and root crops are more flexible.
Tips
- Measure sunlight at your garden site during midsummer for the most accurate reading — sun angles change dramatically through the year.
- Morning sun is gentler than afternoon sun. A spot that gets morning light and afternoon shade is perfect for lettuce and greens.
- If your yard is mostly shaded, consider removing a lower tree limb or two to let in more light — even one extra hour helps.
- Reflected light from white walls or fences can add useful indirect light to partially shaded areas.
- Container gardens can be moved to follow the sun through the day — a good strategy if your yard has mixed light conditions.
